This website is dedicated to Chase Morgan Rodgers of Cary, North Carolina, also known as “Speedy” Chase Rodgers. Chase was 20 years old when he was killed in an automobile wreck on May 29th, 2014. Chase’s 2004 Toyota Corolla was being driven by an 18 year woman who was traveling Eastbound on I-40 when she lost control of the vehicle between the Wade Avenue exit and Chapel Hill Road exit near Cary, NC. According to eye witness reports she began to change lanes when someone in her blind spot blew their horn. She then lost control of the vehicle.
According to police, the Toyota left the road at an approximate speed of 73 mph. The Corolla impacted a large oak tree at 60 mph, wrapping around the tree and collapsing the roof. Chase was riding in the front passenger seat and died at the scene. Ironically, Chase was the only occupant of the vehicle who was killed and the only occupant who was wearing a seatbelt. The part of the car where Chase was sitting took most of the impact.
I made a short film about the life and death of my son, Chase, titled “Deadly Influences. The video below is a 1-minute trailer for that film. I have been using th 23-minute film at speaking engagements in schools and churches with great success! I will be showing the film at the Cary Theater in Cary, NC on December 4th at 7 pm. Tickets are $5 each. Stay tuned. I will be making the film available for purchase online.
The driver and the young man who was riding in the back seat were both taken to the hospital with serious injuries and later released. The driver was charged with provisional DWI pending the outcome of blood work. She was also charged with Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle and possession of marijuana.
A court hearing in this case was set for February 13th, 2015. According to police, the driver had a THC metabolite in her bloodstream, which means that she had smoked marijuana at some point. However, the North Carolina crime lab does not quantify the THC content in the bloodstream. The reason for this is that there is nothing in the law that defines impairment by marijuana in North Carolina. Her medical condition at the time of the wreck prevented police from assessing her for DWI at the scene. The toxicology report did not show the presence of any other drugs other than the morphine she was administered by paramedics.
STORY CONTINUES BELOW VIDEO THUMBNAIL
I produced a short film about Chase’s life by interviewing some of his friends. This is a compelling short, documentary-style film, that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
UPDATE
Unfortunately, on January 3rd, 2015, the young lady who was driving Chase’s car when the wreck occurred, took her own life. Fire officials believe she poured gasoline on the floor of her apartment, stood in the middle of it, and ignited it. It is tragic that we have lost two bright and talented young people in their prime, so close together.
My name is Darryl Rodgers. I am Chase’s Dad. I loved my son, Chase with all of my heart; with all of my being. I miss Chase dearly, and as I am updating this site, he has only been gone a little over 7 months. As time goes on, I will try to share more about Chase and his life via this website. I hope that you, the reader, will find the information here interesting and enlightening.
One of my goals is to bring something positive out of this tragic loss of life in the years I have remaining. I hope that in some way, you will be blessed by what you find here.
Sincerely,
